Beatriz Milhazes gives a cutting and pasting workshop for children at Inclusartiz Cultural Center
The activity was carried out as a parallel program to the exhibition “From Avenue to Harmony,” which closes next Sunday, March 19
On the last March 11th, the Inclusartiz Cultural Center promoted a cutting and collage workshop with artist Beatriz Milhazes. Aimed at children, the activity was carried out as a parallel program to the exhibition “From Avenue to Harmony: More than a Century of Carnival in Downtown Rio de Janeiro,” which ends next Sunday, 19.
At the invitation of the chief curator of Instituto Inclusartiz, Victor Gorgulho – who is also curating the exhibition –, Milhazes introduced the children to the fundamentals of cutting and collage and proposed the creation of a kind of collective mobile from elements frequently used in her production. Squares, flowers, arabesques and stripes, following the lines of her iconic “Gamboa” series, already exhibited in several Brazilian and foreign institutions, such as MASP (São Paulo), Parque Lage (Rio de Janeiro), The Jewish Museum (New York), and White Cube Gallery (London).
The painter, illustrator, engraver and teacher from Rio de Janeiro, one of the most prominent names in Brazilian contemporary art, nationally and internationally, recently resumed her work with children through the creation of an educational program carried out occasionally in museums, galleries and cultural centers.
“I really think that the child should be our main focus, because it is at that moment in our lives that everything is formed. It is the right time to plant good seeds. It is at this moment that you need to understand certain things, and art is fundamental in this process. It brings respectability, it brings the possibility of imagination, of creation, of working the poetic and the human. So I am grateful for this opportunity that Inclusartiz has given me to go on with my program. The next one will be in England,” says Milhazes about the target audience of her workshops.
A group of 15 children was invited to participate in the activity with the artist. Between the ages of 7 and 12, the little ones live in Gamboa, where the cultural center is located, and in Rocinha, where Inclusartiz supports projects developed by cultural producers Michel Moreira and Michelle Veríssimo, such as Roda Cultural da Rocinha.
