Instituto Inclusartiz announces the selected participants for the 2023 edition of its artistic residency program
The Open Call received over 500 applications from artists, curators, and researchers from all Brazilian states and nine other nations within the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP)
Instituto Inclusartiz announced on Friday, July 28th, the list of selected participants for the 2023 edition of its Artistic Residency and Research Program. The Open Call, which offered ten positions for artists, curators, and researchers from all Brazilian states and nine other countries within the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Equatorial Guinea, Mozambique, Portugal, São Tomé and Príncipe, and Timor Leste), received over 500 applications.
To join the prestigious program this year, ten individuals were chosen: Adriano Machado (Bahia, Brazil), Ana Carla Soler (São Paulo, Brazil), Ângela Berlinde (Porto, Portugal), Evna Moura (Pará, Brazil), Froiid (Minas Gerais, Brazil), Iane Cabral (Pará, Brazil), Íris Helena (Paraíba, Brazil), Laryssa Machada (Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil), Lucélia Maciel (Goiás, Brazil), and Moisés Zuane (Luanda, Angola).
The selection process was carried out by the team of Instituto Inclusartiz and a guest jury composed of five professionals from different regions of Brazil, each representing a different part of the country. The jury members were Brígida Campbell (Minas Gerais – Southeast), Divino Sobral (Goiás – Midwest), Keila Sankofa (Amazonas – North), Josué Matos (Santa Catarina – South), and Maria Rosa (Pernambuco – Northeast).
“This jury evaluated each application individually, seeking to understand the relevance of the project and its coherence with the applicant’s portfolio, as well as the appropriateness of the proposed work within our cultural center, taking into account our specificities and the opportunities we have to promote its development. It’s important to highlight that during the process, each jury member reviewed the portfolios and then we debated together all the names that were considered relevant for the selection process,” explained Lucas Albuquerque, Curator of the Artistic Residency and Research Program.
After this pre-selection process, between 18 and 20 names were chosen for interviews with the Inclusartiz team, which includes Lucas Albuquerque, as well as curators Victor Gorgulho and Aldones Nino, and the institute’s president, Frances Reynolds. The residencies are scheduled to start in October and will be conducted until the end of 2023 and the beginning of 2024 at the institute’s headquarters in Gamboa, in the Port Zone of Rio de Janeiro. They will be divided into five cycles, each lasting four weeks. Each cycle will consist of one artist and one curator/researcher.
The Program
Established since 2014, Instituto Inclusartiz’s Artistic Residency and Research Program aims to foster national and international artistic production. Over seventy professionals have already participated in the program, including renowned figures such as Amanda Abi Khalil (Lebanon), Yuko Hasegawa (Japan), Gerda Steiner & Jorg Lenzlinger (Switzerland), Hans Ulrich Obrist (England), and Valeska Soares (Brazil). The program has also supported young Brazilian talents like Hal Wildson, Marcela Cantuária, Maxwell Alexandre, Manauara Clandestina, Vivian Caccuri, and Xadalu Tupã Jekupé.
In 2022, the institute revamped the program and launched its first open call, targeting applicants from Brazil and countries in Southern Africa (South Africa, Botswana, Comoros, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Eswatini, Zambia, and Zimbabwe). The inaugural call received over 530 submissions. In this new format, the program is divided into cycles, each lasting four weeks. Each cycle consists of a pair composed of one artist and one curator/researcher, who receive all the necessary support for the development of their research. This support includes accommodation, a shared studio space at the Inclusartiz Institute’s headquarters, personalized curatorial guidance, dedicated production and communication teams, and a residency stipend to cover expenses such as food, transportation, and art materials.
As part of the program, Inclusartiz also organizes a series of educational activities, such as workshops, seminars, publications, public talks, and critique sessions, aimed at art students from educational institutions in Rio de Janeiro. These activities foster cultural exchange between the residents and the local artistic community.
