Marcela Cantuária starts artistic residency in Paris

The artist from Rio de Janeiro will produce a new work to integrate the collective exhibition Rêver La Terre, which will open to the public at Espace Krajcberg on April 20

Through a partnership between Instituto Inclusartiz, L’AiR Arts and the Frans Krajcberg Friends Association, artist Marcela Cantuária, from Rio de Janeiro, started in April a one-month artist residency at the historic studio 11 Cité Falguière, in Paris, where Frans Krajcberg (1921-2017), a Polish-Brazilian artist, also had a studio. Her trip to France takes place within the scope of the Rêver La Terre exhibition (Dreaming the Earth), a collective show that is committed to reinforce Krajcberg’s legacy, contributing to, as he himself wished, “a global and diversified artistic movement about safeguarding the planet’s fundamental balances.”

In her production, Cantuária works on the intersection of feminist and socio-environmental struggles, mixing historical images of the political world with contemporary visual culture representations. During the residency, she will delve into the contemporary art and nature archives of the Espace Krajcberg center – where the exhibition will take place between April 20 and July 1 – to study elements and seek her own reflection on the relations between Europe and Latin America and the context of forest destruction in the climate emergency. The proposal is for the artist to produce, based on her research in the Krajcberg archives, a new work to integrate the exhibition.

Organized by the Rêver La Terre Association and the Frans Krajcberg Friends Association, the Rêver La Terre exhibition brings together works by contemporary Brazilian and French-Guyanese artists in line with projects by NGOs that work on the front lines in defense of the Amazon rainforest peoples, for the protection of their territories and the autonomy of their communities.

Under the curatorship of Aldones Nino, curator of Instituto Collegium (Spain) and collaborator of Instituto Inclusartiz, and environmental lawyer Pietro De Biase, the exhibition also features works by other Inclusartiz former residents, such as Manauara Clandestina, Moara Tupinambá and Xadalu Tupã Jekupé. The exhibition includes works by Clarisse da Silva, Denilson Baniwa, Coletivo MAHKU, Frans Krajcberg, Rafael Prado and Rodrigo Braga.
